Lost in Translation Review | Film Club
I remember watching this many years ago, and I really enjoyed it. I'd have to watch it again to fully grasp the criticisms, but I think it was quite good, and both Cheadle and Sandler were outstanding.
Instead of comparing movies or stories enjoy them and they're uniqueness. The Coen Brothers are a rare breed of filmmaking. Everyone is entitled to they're own opinions
Is there an English version of this video? And thanks for giving away the ending to everyone.
It is a jumble mess, big jumble mess
I wouldn't recommend the deer hunter to anyone, there's very little value in it. Imagine being an American invader, a grapist, a m✓rd€r3®, a baby killer, and then make a movie about how you had shell shock and poor you. The vietnamese soldier was fighting for their land and their independence for 20 years against France and the UK when the u.s. got in and their teeth knocked out by a soldier they considered inferior. This movie is a shameful depiction of how the baby boomers justify their depravity.
Is ok 🎉
Ive loved Scoot since the first movie I encountered him in - 'In Search of a Midnight Kiss'. Only stumbled across it by accident a couple of years after its release. Ive also spent a lil bit of time in Central and South America, which gave me such great opportunities for documentary photography - meaning the character of Caulker was easy to relate to. Edwards worked REAL miracles with this, especially with the CGI (Id never have guessed some of the military vehicles seen interspersed in traffic were CGI). Kudos, too for touring Mexico with expensive equipment and minimal protection. This is why I love movies that take a more backseat, slow and documentary route through a narrative: when done with skill, it can be utterly immersive.
I passionately disagree with you guys. To me its a massively underrated movie, and it really sounds like you guys missed the point. Too bad.
Saw this in a movie theater in Manhattan back in the day. Its just an ass kicking movie with a mild 'dont be an asshole' message.
It's Cinematically stunning and enjoyable.
Just good fun.
'Gil' Gunderson in The Simpsons was based on Lemmon's performance as Shelly Levene.
Doesnt work for me.
Totally like your take, first half great, second half lacking in a lot , especially budget and production value.
This a one time only viewing film, for me. Never went back for another bite
Proto Goodfellas.
Watched this movie prob 3 or so times, thoroughly enjoyable. All actors superb.
Great epi, Sci Fi great genre. How about AI replaces Her, Altered States replaces Upstream, keep Interstellar, Martian replaces Sam Rockwell film, Close Encounters replaces Arrival, BladeRunner ( yes, yes, yes), Planet of the Apes replaces Sunshine, 2001 ( the gold standard), keep Star Wars. Honorable Mention being first Alien movie.
The BSs makes Peaky Blinders sound like Shakespeare.
CR , all thrill , no Fill.
Michael Caine is a Badass. Check out the 'Man who would be King', MC co-stars with Sean Connery. More ass kicking.
I consider this a minor gem, based on character development.
Barry Lyndon. Masterpiece.
Watched TDH prob 40 plus times as a teen, we really gobbled it up. That said, a criticism could be the contrived story line in Vietnam. It's a magnificent film. Check out 1978s 'The Boys in Company C' that covers similar ground, lots to absorb and enjoy.
So I just tried to watch this movie, I made it to the one hour mark, dear lord it's a bad film, the main character Erin comes of as a bitch with a chip on her shoulder, and who dresses like that in a professional environment, I mean it fine for outside of the office, but come on, oh and that snarky office woman when erin asks a simple question about why there were medical records in a real estate file. It was just a bad film.
Very well made and acted but the film has a lie in the middle of it - it has the vc doing the very thing in fact the US and its South Vietnam allies did - the Russian roulette scene. Another film that focuses on the invader ( the USA) and leaves the inhabitants ( the vietnamese) a subordinate role in their own country. So, we'll made or not, I'll never admire it.
Fucking hate this movie. It normalizes poverty rather than investigating it. It also has problemtic views on toughness and the welfare system.
This movie sucks
Great film!
I think all the performances were good, but yeah the plot was just too messy. Could've probably done with a bit of a longer runtime and some serious reconsideration of some plot points. El Mariachi definitely should've had some greater involvement with Sands, and maybe keeping Carolina alive and having him be in a situation towards the end where Mariachi has a flashback and does everything in his power to not repeat history by letting Carolina die would've been much greater use of both characters. Overall, the movie has some fun action but suffers greatly from a plot that has so much potential that is put together like a puzzle where all the pieces fit into each other, all mixed up.
It’s a very fair take.
NO BACK TO THE FUTURE YOU GUYS A BLOODY RUBBISH 😂😂😂
Where we're going, we don't need Back to the Future 😎
The one part I don't completly understand is (...and sorry if I spoil it for someone....) the whole legal conflict; you'll see, in my Justice system, the issues wouldn't end into Public Trial. Charlie was a victim of the 9/11 attacks, he have PTSD and in a moment of extreme depresion, he atempted to kill himself by making a scenario that forces the police to shot him. But the trial wasn't about that. It was about Charlie's mental capacity and I don't know if the Common Law deals with that in that way. The movie didn't show how the whole thing ended but I don't think we needed to understand what happenned. Other than that, I quite like it. It have jokes that remain us that it is a Happy Madison film but those don't hurt the movie for me.
Do possum next
I just re-watched this film tonight after having seen it ages ago on VHS in the 80's. I've been reading reviews that say the director had no vision and that the opening hr (Wedding was too long) but maybe it's because I'm older now that I appreciate the whole film more. Without that first hr or if it have cut down, I'm not sure how hard the rest of the movie would have hit me. Walken steals every scene he's in. But, obviously, the acting is top-notch everywhere. I'm left with the images of Nick, pre-war dancing and dancing full of joy, to the final Russian roulette scene where his eyes are dead from drugs and just the Psychological toll he has gone through. Incredible.
The wedding scene really is way too long. That’s my only criticism of an otherwise fantastic film.
The opening is a genius set up for what comes next, it's sort of detached and floaty then BANG it grips you like no other film can.
Great film
I just thought it was weird and overrated.
Brilliant film. Whilst Pete Postlethwaite is on top notch form (like he always was), but for me the stand out actor was Steve Tompkinson. The church scene, attempted suicide and hospital scenes are heartbreaking 😢
One of the best movies ever made as far as I am concerned. I am addicted to this story. So beautiful. And the way Yamada concentrates on the tiny details of life really draws the viewer in. In many respects THAT aspect of this film reminds me of the latest remake of Shogun (based on James Clavel's novel and incidentally also starring Sanada san. ) That series also focuses on authenticity as shown by the tiny details of life in Japan - although in that case it focuses on the senior leadership of Japan and is set at the beginning of the Tokugawa era (the real life Toranaga) where as Twilight Samurai focuses on life at the bottom end of the Samurai totem pole at the end of the same era. Beautiful movie as I say.
This film is a masterpiece on many levels.
Watched this the other day and have to say I loved Johnny Depp in this. I'm not a Banderas fan but liked him here. I have to say though the plot was so convoluted that had Depp not been in it I probably would not have watched it all.
It is an awesome innovative idea nothing like it the best spirit travel movie that made me see the video game far cry 3 in a different vision but sadly they missed the point, far cry 3 should've just been like an extended version of the beach movie where the essence theme is search for paradise
I’m the only one in the world that can claim this as my all time favorite movie ever. I’ve seen it over 50+ times. Maybe that makes me weird?
It is a good movie. I like it too. Loved the soundtrack. The message. Sandler's acting is impressive. Maybe the movie it is involved with a sensitive topic and that's what does not appeal to people. It doesn't help that it is not easy to find. I don't know if it is streaming somewhere, I couldn't find it.
I understand that feeling, when I was 18 I watched A Silent Voice 5 times, indeed it's still one of my favorite movies but recently I watched this one and it's going to that same list.
I love the pictures at the end 😂 when I was trying to force my music video loves on Andy when we were thinking of our lists my tops definitely include Tenacious D Tribute, RHCP can't stop and Blink 182 Always
Morag, how have I only just seen this comment!? That Blink video is awesome and it hurts my head
I saw this movie as a youngster. The thing I'll never forget Meryl Streep's performance. I had no idea who she was. It had to be one of the 1st movies she made. I could not take my eyes off of her. I'm like, this is a great actress. Sure enough, she was nominated for an academy award for best supporting actress. I think she won a Oscar shortly thereafter. I knew from this movie that she was a great actress.
She was absolutely gorgeous in her youth
First one that came to mind upon me asking myself "What is my most notable music video?", and there are probably better ones but I still love to return to Adam Buxton's fan video of Don't Make Me A Target by Spoon. ua-cam.com/video/CBtXw6CPwg4/v-deo.html
I'd never seen this before, thanks for linking! That was a delightful watch!
What a fun little divergence. I am a bit older than the both of you and I grew up in the Golden Age of music videos being the 80's this stemming from the filth which is known as MTV. For me most of my favorites would be from the eighties specifically the music video I consider the greatest AHA's "Take on Me" and second would be Michael Jackson's "Thiller". The videos from the nineties on that I love tend to concepts like from the band Tool, and The Shins, and Of mice and Men. I also love the music videos from Peter Gabriel and Bjork. This was a lot of fun and I cannot wait to see you again next week. Take Care and have an amazing week.
Glad you enjoyed it, Damien! It was fun to try something a little different. Excellent choices. Take on Me and Thriller really are some of the all-time classics. They have an authentic approach to concept that is very difficult to capture.
Spanglish is a good one
( 11:56 ) They both worked on CBBC as kids so I think they knew each other from doing Young Dracula and The Sarah Jane Adventures. 👍🏻
I felt like this movie was very confused in terms of who was supposed to be the main character. Cheadle was seemingly the protagonist, but Sandler had the heavier topic in his character. Neither character was particularly well-written and the story felt insensitive to the story. If Alan is the protagonist, then Charlie's trauma is a plot device to help Alan cope with a mid-life crisis that is never explore enough to make him look anything less than selfish. While Charlie being the protagonist, makes it seem as though the message of the movie, is that you should do anything to help anybody, even if they don't appreciate what you are doing for them, while letting helping them take over your life. A shame, since I wanted to like this movie.
